Managing and Preventing Garden Moles

Moles can be a frustrating problem for any gardener. These small, burrowing mammals can create unsightly mounds and tunnels in your lawn, damaging plant roots and disrupting the overall appearance of your garden. While they primarily feed on soil invertebrates like earthworms, their digging activity can wreak havoc on your carefully cultivated outdoor space. Understanding mole behaviour and implementing effective management and prevention strategies is crucial to maintaining a healthy and mole-free garden.

Understanding Mole Behaviour

Moles are active year-round, but their activity is often more noticeable in the spring and autumn when the soil is moist and easier to dig. They create extensive tunnel systems, typically a few inches below the surface, which they use to hunt for food. These tunnels are often visible as raised ridges on your lawn. Moles are solitary creatures, so a single mole can be responsible for significant damage.

Identifying Mole Activity

The most obvious sign of moles is the presence of molehills – conical mounds of soil pushed up from their tunnels. You may also notice raised tunnels running across your lawn or garden beds. These tunnels can disrupt the root systems of your plants, causing them to wilt or die.

Management and Prevention Strategies

There are several approaches to managing and preventing moles in your garden:

  1. Trapping: Trapping is often the most effective way to remove moles. There are various types of mole traps available, including scissor traps and tunnel traps. Place traps in active tunnels, identified by probing the ground to find the main runways. Check traps daily and relocate them if they are unsuccessful.
  2. Repellents: Mole repellents can deter moles from entering your garden. These repellents come in various forms, including granular, liquid, and sonic devices. Granular and liquid repellents are typically applied to the soil, while sonic devices emit a high-frequency sound that is unpleasant to moles. The effectiveness of repellents can vary, and they may need to be reapplied regularly.
  3. Physical Barriers: For valuable plants or small garden areas, consider using physical barriers. Bury hardware cloth or wire mesh around the perimeter of the area, extending at least 45 centimetres (18 inches) below the surface. This can prevent moles from tunnelling into the protected zone.
  4. Natural Predators: Encouraging natural predators like owls, hawks, and foxes can help control mole populations. Avoid using rodenticides, as these can harm non-target animals that prey on moles.
  5. Reduce Food Source: Moles feed primarily on soil invertebrates. Reducing the population of these invertebrates may make your garden less attractive to moles. Avoid overwatering your lawn, as this can create favourable conditions for earthworms and other mole food sources.
  6. Professional Lawn Care: Regular lawn maintenance, including aeration and scarification, can help create a less hospitable environment for moles. Healthy, dense turf is less susceptible to mole damage. Consider consulting a professional lawn care service for advice and treatment options.

Important Considerations:

  • Persistence: Mole management can be an ongoing process. You may need to combine several strategies to effectively control moles in your garden.
  • Safety: When using traps or repellents, always follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully. Keep traps and repellents out of reach of children and pets.
  • Humane Methods: Consider using humane trapping methods and repellents whenever possible.

By understanding mole behaviour and implementing these management and prevention strategies, you can minimise the damage they cause and maintain a healthy, beautiful garden. Remember to be persistent and adapt your approach as needed to achieve the best results. For further advice and professional lawn care solutions, contact Lawn Treat.
